Have you ever wanted to mount your GoPro to your backpack strap or a webbing strap like a molle system? By doing this, it gives you the freedom to get away from a standalone chest harness or other mounting that is cumbersome and not versatile. This simple mount gives you endless capabilities to mount it nearly anywhere you can find a strap or webbing. This simple mount is made with two components and cost less than $2! Can't beat that. You are going to need a Simpson Strong-Tie Plate (cost: $0.55) and one stainless steel ¼ - 20 x ¼ in bolt. ($1.18 for 2).

Everything here was bought at Home Depot.

The first thing you are going to do is place the plate in a vise with the middle holes halfway above the vise grip-top.

Since the corners are sharp, take a file and round all the edges. If you forget this step you run the chance of stagging or tearing clothing and wearing out your straps.

Look on the edges also to see if there are any burrs and file them smooth.

Now bend the plate to a 90∘ degree angle. You can use a regular hammer or a rubber mallet. Just make sure you lightly tap along the entire bend. You want it to be even across the entire plate.

Take the plate out, flip it upside down and slowly close the jaws of the vise. Be careful that the plate does not spring out of the vise and go flying.

So far this is how it should look. Take it out once more, move it higher in the vise and finish pressing the piece together.

NOTE: If you have thick shoulder straps, or are going to place it onto something with ¼ inch or greater thickness, do not close the vise all the way.

Allow the plate to have a gap at the bend, it will be easier to fit over your shoulder straps. If it's going over molle webbing you can clamp it down pretty close like this. It will give it a very secure fit.

If you aligned the middle holes correctly when you did your initial bend, your holes should be lined up at the bottom.

It's best if you have a drill press so you can clamp the plate to the drill table. If you don't have a drill press, clamp the plate to a piece of wood. Use a ¼ inch drill bit and drill a hole in the center hole farthest away from the bend.

Drilling the hole will make burrs on the backside of the plate. Take a file to it and smooth it down.

Now all you need to do is assemble the mount.

The bolts I bought were ½ inch so I had to file them down in the vise to get them close to ¼ inch. Dry fit the plate onto your shoulder strap or webbing and see how long you need your bolt. If you have a thick strap you might need a ½ inch bolt and will not have to worry about filing it down.

Take your filed bolt and place it through the hole and screw your camera mount into it.

Voila! You're done.

I have used this on a shore dive where I got rolled by 5 foot waves 3 times before I was able to stand up. The gopro stayed exactly where I had it mounted onto my BC. This is an amazing, rugged mount anyone can make. This mount will be more sturdy than anything you can buy off ebay or amazon and is affordable, even to those with the most frugal budget.
